To further advance the development of
world-class journals and enhance the ability of experts, scholars, and graduate
students from the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research
(IWHR) to publish papers in English scientific journals, International Research
and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES) leveraging its rich
experience in running English journals and advantages in talent resources, held
a training session on English scientific journal paper writing for the entire
institute on December 26, 2024. The training was hosted by Prof. Zhang Jianli,
Deputy Director of IRTCES. Prof. Chen Yuehong, Associate Editor of
the International Journal of Sediment Research, and Prof. Paige Chyu,
Executive Editor of International Soil and Water Conservation Research,
shared their experiences related to journal paper writing. Over 40 staff
members, graduate students, and international students from various units of
the institute attended the training.
Prof. Chen Yuehong gave an in-depth
explanation on "Common problems in journal papers", analyzed the main
reasons for paper rejection from an editor’s perspective,
and provided detailed guidance on how to select journals, write papers, and
consider various aspects during the submission process.
ProF. Paige Chyu delivered a lecture on
"The process of academic paper publication". From an editor’s perspective, she comprehensively interpreted the key links in
the academic paper publication process and taught practical "tips to avoid
pitfalls". Meanwhile, she also provided professional guidance on
communication skills such as how to grasp the timing of communication with the
editorial department and appropriately inquire about the status of paper
publication. In addition, Senior Researcher Paige Chyu shared her experiences
in aspects including application for visiting studies, visa processing, and
academic exchanges during the visiting period, based on her own experience as a
visiting scholar at the University of Connecticut in the United States.
Participants had heated discussions and
exchanges on topics of interest. This training is a beneficial attempt by
IRTCES to base itself on its business functions, tap into resource advantages,
and actively explore international talent cultivation and service capacity
improvement. Through this training, participants not only gained a clearer
understanding of the process of writing and publishing academic papers, but
also strengthened academic exchanges between various units within the
institute, stimulated the innovative thinking of researchers, and is of great
significance for improving the acceptance rate of papers and enhancing academic
influence.
