The Ministry of Water Resources recently released the 2022 Gazette of River Sediment in China.

In 2022, the total annual measured runoff at representative stations of China’s major rivers reached 1,332 billion cubic meters, 7% lower than the multi-year average and 7% less than that in 2021. The total annual sediment transport at these stations was 390 million tons, 73% lower than the multi-year average but 18% higher than in 2021. Specifically, the runoff of the Yangtze River and Pearl River accounted for 58% and 25% of the total runoff at major river representative stations, respectively. The sediment transport of the Yellow River and Yangtze River made up 52% and 17% of the total sediment transport at major river representative stations, respectively. The average sediment concentrations at representative stations of the Yellow River, Tarim River, and Shule River were relatively high, at 7.70 kg/m3, 3.95 kg/m3, and 4.08 kg/m3, respectively, while those at representative stations of other rivers were all below 0.882 kg/m3.

2022 Gazette of River Sediment in China is structured into chapters including an overview, the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, the Huaihe River, the Haihe River, the Pearl River, the Songhua and Liaohe Rivers, southeast rivers, and inland rivers. It provides statistical analysis of measured runoff, sediment transport, erosion and deposition in key river sections and important reservoirs, and introduces major sediment-related events in 2022, objectively reflecting sediment changes in China’s major rivers.

The timely release of the Gazette of River Sediment in China provides a scientific basis for comprehensive river basin management, flood and drought disaster prevention, water resource management, the construction and operation of water-related projects, and aquatic ecological restoration. It also serves as a platform for the public to understand the sediment status of China’s rivers.
