The Symposium on the Compilation of Gazette of
River Sediment in China and Strategies for River Water-Sediment Change
Trends in China was held both online and offline in Beijing on October 28. Mr. LIU
Weiping, Vice Minister of Water Resources, delivered a keynote report. Mr. LIN
Zuoding, Director of the Hydrology Department of the Ministry of Water
Resources, presented a work report. Mr. KUANG Shangfu, President of IWHR and
Director of the IRTCES, and Mr. WANG Xiaogang, Vice President of IWHR, chaired
the meeting.
The symposium featured an invited report titled "Changes in
River Water and Sediment and Reflections " by Academician HU Chunhong,
Vice President of IWHR and Deputy Director of IRTCES. Special reports on
water-sediment change trends in the Yangtze River and the Yellow River were
delivered by Mr. XU Quanxi, Deputy Director of the Hydrological Bureau of the Changjiang
Water Resources Commission; and Ms. LIU Xiaoyan, Deputy Chief Engineer of the
Yellow River Water Resources Commission.
Mr. LIU Weiping fully acknowledged the important role of Gazette of
River Sediment in China in China’s water conservancy and hydropower development
and river management, which has promoted the continuous development of China’s
social economy. He profoundly discussed three aspects: the achievements of
China’s water-sediment management, the basic situation of river water and
sediment in China, and the understanding of water-sediment management. In
particular, he proposed strategies to respond to water-sediment variation from
the perspectives of respecting objective history, carefully analyzing reality,
revering natural laws, and scientifically judging trends. He emphasized that in
the face of new situations and problems that may arise in sediment management,
it is necessary to strengthen river sediment monitoring and scientific research
to provide scientific conclusions, which also sets work goals and directions
for sediment workers.

Mr. LIU Weiping delivered a keynote
report.
Mr. LIN Zuoding reviewed in detail the 20-year development history
of Gazette of River Sediment in China and fully affirmed its achievements. He
discussed the current status of China’s river sediment monitoring, and looked
forward to future work from three aspects: improving the sediment monitoring
station network, upgrading automatic sediment monitoring technology, and
strengthening sediment analysis and forecasting.

Mr. LIn Zuoding delivered a work
report.
Participants included representatives from relevant departments of
the Ministry of Water Resources (General Office, Planning Department, Engineering
Construction Department, Hydrology Department, etc.); heads of relevant
directly affiliated units in Beijing; experts from Water Resources Commissions
from seven major river basins (including the Yangtze River and Yellow River); scholars
from research institutions and universities (such as IWHR, Nanjing Hydraulic
Research Institute, Tsinghua University, Hohai University, Wuhan University); representatives
from Hydrological departments at all levels. Hosted by IRTCES under the
guidance of the Hydrology Department of the Ministry of Water Resources, the
symposium was also attended by Mr. Liu Guangquan and Mr. PAN Qingbin, Deputy
Directors of IRTCES.

Mr. KUANG Shangfu presided over the
meeting.

Mr. HU Chunhong delivered an invited
Report.
