December 10, 2006

As 2006 draws to an end, we feel that we can look back on a successful and eventful year for WASER, and its Officers and Council would like to take this opportunity to wish all Members a happy and prosperous New Year. During the last year there have been many IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS for the Association, including:

(1) The WASER Website has expanded and it has continued to attract increasing attention from scientists and engineers in many different parts of the world.

(2) The International Journal of Sediment Research (IJSR, edited, published and distributed by IRTCES) is now firmly established as the official journal of WASER and its quality has been further improved. The number and range of contributors have increased significantly over the past two years and IRTCES have made important improvements to the compilation of the Journal. The Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2006 between IAHR and IRTCES, has further increased the visibility of the Journal, with IAHR publicising IJSR via its web site, membership newsletter, etc.

(3) The first issue of the electronic version of the WASER Newsletter was edited, published and distributed by the WASER Secretariat.

(4) WASER co-sponsored the very successful Second Sino-American Workshop on Advanced Computational Modeling in Hydroscience and Engineering, which was held from 25 - 26 November, 2006, in Beijing , China . About 80 scientists and engineers from the United States , the Netherlands , the United Kingdom , France and China attended the event. The third Workshop will be held in Hawaii in 2009.

(5) WASER co-sponsored the Second International Conference on Estuaries & Coasts (ICEC-2006), which was held from 28 - 30 November, 2006 at Guangzhou City , Guangdong Province, China . 260 scientists and engineers from 20 countries attended the Conference. The third Conference will be held in Sendai , Japan in 2009. (Email: tanaka@tsunami2.civil.tohoku.ac.jp HP: http://donko.civil.tohoku.ac.jp/icec/index.html ).

(6) Headed by Prof. Wang Yangui of the IRTCES, a Chinese delegation comprising specialists from IRTCES, IWHR, the Yangtze River Scientific Research Institute, the Yellow River Institute of Hydraulic Research and the Pearl River Institute of Hydraulic Research visited the UK and Italy from June 23 to July 4, 2006. They visited the University of Exeter and the University of Cardiff in the UK and the University of Padova and CESI RICERCA SpA in Italy and met with Prof. Des Walling, President of WASER and Prof. Giampaolo Di Silvio, Vice President of WASER to discuss WASER activities and the future development of the Association.

(7) WASER is co-sponsoring the International Bedload Surrogates Workshop, which is scheduled to be held from April 11 through 14, 2007 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , USA . (HP: http://www.safl.umn.edu ).

(8) WASER is co-sponsoring the 10 th International Symposium on River Sedimentation (10 th ISRS), which will be held from August 1-4 2007 in Moscow , Russia . It is hoped that many WASER Members will participate in the Symposium and the LOC is generously offering a 10% discount on the registration fee for WASER Members (HP: http://isrs10.hydro-msu.ru/en/index.htm )

(9) The Second Meeting of the WASER Council will also be held in Moscow during the 10 th ISRS.

THE ASSOCIATION
is continuing to grow and in 2006 now has 285 members from over 40 countries. Looking back over the second year of WASER, we hope that the further development of the Website, the Journal and the Newsletter will play an increasingly important role in raising the profile of WASER and in facilitating the creation of its own unique identity. The Officers and Council of WASER will do their best to promote the development of the Association during 2007, but your support for our young association will be very important in ensuring its success.
