Renovation Project of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Water Resources- Research on Optimal Use of Runoff and Sediment and Beneficial Utilizations of Sediment Resources- checked and accepted 

    (IRTCES News, April 13, 2006): The meeting for checking and accepting the Renovation Project of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Water Resources - Research on Optimal Use of Runoff and Sediment and Beneficial Utilizations of Sediment Resources - undertaken by the IRTCES and IWHR was held in Beijing on April 13. The experts from the Department of Water Resources, the Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology, Ministry of Water Resources; Tsinghua University; Beijing University; Bureau of South-to-North Water Transfer Planning & Design, Ministry of Water Resources; Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (RCEES-CAS); Yellow River Conservancy Commission; Extension Centre for Scientific & Technology Achievements, Ministry of Water Resources; etc. were presented at the meeting. Vice Director General, Prof. Chen Mingzhong, presided over the meeting and Vice President of the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) , Vice Director of the IRTCES, Project Director, Prof. Hu Chunhong was at the meeting. The group of experts listened to the presentation and carefully reviewed the documents provided by the project research group. Through questions and discussions, it was unanimous that all experts consider the project has fulfilled the assignment stipulated by the project contract and reached the expected result, and, thus, it was agreed to accept of the project and meanwhile, the research results were highly praised fro their original creativity.

In the process of utilization of water resources and river development and management, sediment was treated as problem and the joint optimal use of runoff and sediment was not taken into account in the past while only optimal use of water resources was considered. It is necessary to conduct research on joint use of runoff and sediment and beneficial of sediment resources from the point view of integrated and sustainable watershed development. The Renovation Project of the Ministry of Water Resources undertaken by the project group studied the theory of optimal use of runoff and sediment and beneficial utilizations of sediment resources, technology of regulating runoff and sediment, modes of optimal use of sediment and runoff in the downstream Yellow River and approaches for beneficial utilizations of sediment resources by use of means and methods of research, data analysis, systematic analysis, mathematical modeling, etc. Several important innovative research results have been achieved and a broad prospect for its application is seen.
