(IRTCES NEWS March 18,2006):The 24th Plenary Meeting of the Chinese National Committee for UNESCO was held in Beijing on March 17. The representatives from 28 member and collaborative organizations attended the meeting. The Secretary General of the Chinese National Committee for UNESCO, Mr. Tian Xiaogang first gave a brief account of the achievements between the Chinese Government and UNESCO in 2005 and the plan for 2006. The President of the Committee, Vice Minister of Education of the Chinese Government, Mr. Zhang Xinsheng gave his speech on the necessity, present status, requirements, and suggestions for cooperation between the Chinese Government and UNESCO.

In addition, six collaborative organizations in the fields of rural education, water science, biological ethics, social science, intangible cultural heritage protection, and information dissemination were invited to present on their cooperation between China and UNESCO. Vice Director, Secretary General of the IRTCES, Dr. Hu Chunhong was invited to present the cooperation programs between China and UNESCO in the fields of water science, including role of the National Committee in the International Hydrological Program(IHP), activities undertaken by the IRTCES as well as problems and countermeasures to these problems for water resources in China.
