Agreement signing between IRTCES and Pearl River Research Institute
Pearl River Estuary Research Center is unveiled by Vice Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Suo Lisheng and UNESCO Beijing Officer, Mr. Jayakumar on Dec. 14, in Nanhai, Guandong Province .
Pearl River is the third largest river in China with special features in terms of river basin and sedimentation. Challenges including flood caused by tide, intrusion of seawater, water pollution as well as degradation of navigation due to sedimentation, have negative impact on the sustainable development of river basin. It is crucial to protect environment and ecosystem and solve sedimentation prone problems.
The Center is jointly established by International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES) and the Pearl River Water Resource Commission (PRWRC). It will undertake researches on water and sedimentation in southern China where economy is fast-developed, and can serve as an openplatform of scientific research for international and domestic experts.
